Right now I'm listening to:

Elvis Presley - In the Ghetto
Otis Redding - Sitting on the Dock of the Bay
Eddie Vedder with Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn - Long Road
The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
Gordon Lightfoot - If You Could Read My Mind
Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah
2Face Idibia - African Queen

Any other recommendations?

john, i was watching this thing on zed tv (i think that's what its called) on k-os. the point of the program was that he was going to do a song with cbc's radio orchestra. so the program followed throught the whole writing and recordig process. it was pretty good, and i have to say that the song turned out pretty good to. if i had a copy i would pass it along, but maybe you can find it somewhere. the song is called "burning to shine".
hip-hop with and orchestra = interesting stuff

Hey John,

I've been slowly building up my collection of African music. May I recommend Mory Kanté's album "Sabou”. It is reminiscent of Youssou N'Dour's "Coono de Réér" which you lent me so many months ago.

Also, if you have not already done so check out Fela Kuti, a Nigerian musician/activist from the '70s. I think you might like him. His music has great rhythm and catchy hooks and the lyrics are highly political.

Another more modern group in the same afrobeat genre is Antibalas.

Hey Piet! Where is Mory Konte from? Yeah, I know Fela, he's very good. My wife has Femi Kuti's album. He's good as well.

Hey Aaron, thanks for the heads up on the Harper album. I wasn't aware that he had an album coming out but that track sounds awesome. I was listening to Jack Johnson's Curious George album in the store today and it sounded really good. I ended up buying some Otis Redding and Bill Withers for the same price.

I believe he's from Guinea. Definitely West-African.
